Health and Aging in Africa: Longitudinal Studies in South Africa

Now that many adults in South Africa are surviving to older ages than previous generations, they are also facing an increased risk of developing multiple chronic diseases and cognitive impairment associated with aging. The goal of the Health and Aging in Africa: Longitudinal Studies in South Africa (HAALSA) portfolio of research projects is to integrate the study of chronic disease (HIV, cardiometabolic disease, and a focus on cognitive impairments including dementia) and their interactions with social, family, and economic conditions to better understand the determinants of health and functional status in the elderly in South Africa.
