The influence of place on HIV risk among young South African women Molly Rosenberg Audrey Pettifor Nesstar Publisher The influence of place on HIV risk among young South African women AHPU.ZA011.HIVRISK.2011 Audrey Pettifor Molly Rosenberg Nesstar Publisher The proposed study is designed to explore the characteristics of place that may contribute to individual- and population-level risk for HIV among a population of rural South African schoolgirls. uch previous research has been focused on identifying individual HIV risk behaviors, but the spatial and place-based characterization of HIV risk has been largely understudied, particularly among our target population. To identify the characteristics of place associated with HIV risk, we are proposing an ancillary study to HPTN 068: The Effects of Cash Transfer and Community Mobilization in Young South African Women Study to develop two models: one for individual-level HIV sero-prevalence and one for village-level HIV prevalence. These models of individual- and population-level HIV risk will provide insight into the etiology of HIV transmission by identifying the population-level variables most important to HIV risk. Also, it is hoped that the models developed in this study will be used to identify individuals and populations at risk for HIV in order to better inform and target preventive interventions.
