Abstract
The study seeks to better understand relationships between migration, urbanisation, and health in a transition setting through following-up migrants who leave the Agincourt study area in rural Mpumalanga, usually to access employment. The project draws on the long-standing repository of personal and household data collected through the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS). The research is designed to show how migration and urbanisation changes risk factors for health conditions and access to treatment, and to establish whether barriers to care are created by migration. One part of the study enrolls a sample of current residents of the rural origin sub-district population into a new longitudinal cohort, designed to be representative of the population of over 18 year-olds and indicative (with stratification in sampling) of the experience of both migrants and non-migrants. This companion part of the study sample makes use of the existing HDSS to (a) analyze key phenomena on the entire population with the statistical power and richness of the full HDSS and (b) link the HDSS historical data to the sample longitudinal data described above. Thus, we are requesting the data modules that contain key socio-demographic measures from 1992 - 2016. These data will additionally support Becca Wang's related dissertation research that examines migrants' social ties with their origin community in Agincourt, a valuable companion study to the MHFUS itself.Units of Analysis
