Overview
Conduct a field study on a subset of SARI patients to confirm the linking data collected in the surveillanceTo determine the optimal criteria for linking patients identified at surveillance hospitals through SARI surveillance programs to households within the DSS data set
To conduct a community-based case-control study to evaluate risk factors for hospitalized influenza and pneumonia in rural South Africa; cases will come from SARI surveillance, randomly selected controls will come from DSS database.
Individual
1. All permanent residents only
2. All individual and household variables is current status of that household or individual as of the admission date (for cases: the actual admission date; for matched controls: the admission date of the cases).
3. Household variables refer to the household in which the cases and controls belong to on the admission date.
4. SES variables: link to observation date closest to the admission date but not after it.
5. For education: Paul will think more on this variable. We need highest education obtained by cases and controls as of admission date of cases.
6. For child grant: If an eligible child: we need to know if he/she is receiving the grant as of the admission date. If an adult (ineligible for child grant): if they are receiving money/grant for a child on the admission date.
7. Pregnancy status: we just need to know, for women cases and controls, if they were pregnant on the date of admission.
