Overview
We plan to investigate how receipt of the Child Support Grant (CSG) may be influencing fertility decisions among women in Agincourt. The CSG may be seen as an incentive to have children; therefore, fertility may be higher among women or households receiving the grant compared to those not receiving the grant. Alternatively, the economic stimulus of the CSG (at the individual or household level) may empower women to negotiate safer sexual behavior or may make alternative life plans more accessible (higher learning, joining the workforce, etc). It is important to understand how, if at all, the CSG may be influencing fertility trends in order to evaluate potentially unintended consequences, and to better characterize the ways in which economic inputs may influence individual and household level fertility decisions.Individual and household
Coverage
Individual-level: We plan to construct a cohort of all women eligible to receive the CSG living in Agincourt between 1998-2008. Inclusion criteria: female, has at least one child aged 16 or younger as of December 31, 2008. Exclusion criteria: for the primary analysis, we plan to exclude all women lost to follow up during study period (death, move out of study area), move into study area after follow up began. However, we would like to include all women fulfilling the above criteria even if they migrated in/out or died from 1st January 1998 to 31st December 2008 in order to perform a sensitivity analysis.Household-level: We plan to construct a cohort of all dwellings eligible to receive the CSG in Agincourt between 1998-2008. Inclusion criteria: dwellings including at least one female and including at least one child age-eligible to receive the CSG. Exclusion criteria: all-male dwellings.
