Overview
The SUCSES study aims to analyse the relationships between society and the environment at individual, household and village levels in selected villages and communal lands in a former homeland region of South Africa. Such analysis is necessary for identifying, understanding and responding to threats and opportunities for ecological sustainability and human well-being in these systems in order to inform appropriate organizational and policy responses. One important component of this overall aim involves investigation of the social, communal, and private-sector mechanisms underlying household and community-level food security strategies in the region. An understanding of the social and environmental factors that affect the availability of and access to food locally will be critical to designing and implementing effective policies to address food security in the future, especially under the influence of climate change.Household
